I can do things that you cannot.  You can do things that I cannot.  Together we can do great things. – Mother Theresa

In any development project or program, there are a number of players who contribute to the end product.  In the simplest of projects, a contractor will build on a site they own for a tenant who intends to occupy the space.  A developer may be involved.  The municipality may be involved.  A real estate professional may be involved.  A site selector may be involved.

In complex redevelopment projects, a municipality may desire to redevelop a site, block or entire area of the community.  A planner or planning firm is brought in.  Stakeholders, including elected officials, review ideas, developers and contractors are sought, and space is constructed and hopefully filled.  If the deal needs help from a financial perspective, banks, municipalities, other public sector organizations, and even private sector partners are included.

It is important to gather those who can contribute not just financial resources, but intellectual resources as well.  Look for those individuals or organizations who can contribute expertise, technical assistance, passion.  Local foundations may be key stakeholders in the community with an interest in preserving the vibrancy of a downtown or neighborhood.  Investors may also include business people who have been successful in the community and want to give back.   Local business partners may have an interest to help insure their future success.  Carefully look beyond the typical players to find those who can help your project succeed.

If you are the driver of the project, you want those who join you to share your vision and add to your enthusiasm!
