— The story
The need
This project informs the larger economic diversification strategy for the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin.
Improving individual and family well-being requires communities, neighborhoods, and their residents to be involved as contributors to their own and their community's well-being. Collectively, they were asked: "What can we do with what we already have to get what we need?"
Assets already in place
Menominee Tribal Enterprises supplies wood products to manufacturers, brokers, and exporters, and the tribe sustainably manages the Menominee Forest to maximize diversity and optimize the growth and quality of its timber resource.
Native artists are a recognized economic and cultural asset to the community, and the tribe's own culture and history are resources in their own right.
Wolf River Development is working to diversify the economy, and the tribe's ongoing economic diversification study is uncovering additional ways to grow its economic base.
The recommendations
Drug and alcohol abuse and crime topped community concerns, followed closely by adequate housing and blighted properties.
Recommendations included neighborhood watch programs and improved environmental design, along with expanded substance abuse support services, a reporting hotline, and mental health services.
